LED lamps can be used for the lighting, the white will soon everyone. But can we sterilize the LEDs also drinking water? Why is clean water important in developing countries?
The contaminated drinking water, especially in the poorer regions of the world one of the most common causes of death.
You might wonder why boil the water not simply? The problem is that it is not always enough fuel.
Now it has shown that the problem is solved disinfect the water with the light-emitting diodes can be.
Michael Kneissl and his colleagues at the Technical University Berlin and at the Ferdinand Braun Institute for High have developed a system for disinfection.
The LED's used to send but not from the visible light, but these produce UV light.
The ultraviolet light can kill bacteria.
The UV rays are not only used in water treatment.
The UV rays are also used by doctors to treat skin diseases and by the industry such as for curing of inks on food packaging.
The conventional way to generate UV light, was previously the use of mercury vapor lamps which give up but after 5000-8000 hours of use the mind.
Another disadvantage of the mercury vapor lamps is that they need after switching from five to 30 minutes until they are working at full capacity.
The LEDs on the other hand deliver instant full power and have a lifespan of up to 50,000 hours. Also the many on and off does not damage the LEDs.
The researchers now have a manufacturing method for UV LEDs developed
In the "organometallic vapor phase epitaxy" a procedure referred trimethylgallium-called connection with the ammonia gas is passed through an extremely thin, hot sapphire disc with a diameter of about five centimeters.
From a disk which only one third of a millimeter thick, UV-LEDs 2000 can be made.
Researchers can light emitting diodes, has produced in which the light wavelengths of 362-210 nanometers.
The best wavelength for disinfection is between 250-280 nanometers.
The drinking water disinfection for large parts of the world is an important issue.
And since the LEDs do not consume much energy, they can be operated with solar energy systems.
Sun is indeed often enough in these parts are available.
There is a system that works similarly. If you put a pet bottles long enough to the sun, then make the same UV components of sunlight.
However, with the UV-LED lamp will work much more efficiently.
